This is the illustration for our new game “A Hole New World”. We just launched kickstarter and we are very excited to know how it is going to work on the next few days. You can check our kickstarter here =>
We also got greenlit already so we hope this will work as well.
Also you can check the last addition to A Hole New World
This was the snes version of the song of the trailer.
See you soon!
I have participated in the last Ludum Dare 30 in the Jam Session and we did a game. I was programming and doing music and sounds. It really was a lot of fun to do and we are still excited about it because we finished in the 50th position out of 1050.

It was 72 hours working non-stop. We were 5 people talking in gtalk and laughing all the time. Really, really worth it (even if I was super tired next day for work)
For the graphics and music we tried to emulate the nes as much as possible. We limited the colors for each sprite and tile and we used the chip of the nes for producing the sounds. For doing the themes I used famitracker. http://famitracker.com/
Famitracker is a tracker (It was the first time I was using a tracker and it was a lot of fun) that emulates the chip of the nes. It has 4 normal channels and 1 channel for reproducing low quality samples. The 4 normal channels are divided into three types: two square channels, one triangle channel, and one noise channel. Normally the square channels are used for leads or secondary melodies, the triangle is used for bass and the noise is used for the drumset (but there are also a lot of super tricks for using these channels in different ways.)
In the case of the two themes I did, I didnt want to use the sample channel so everything is done only with 4 channels. Here are the tracks:
For the main theme I was looking for something that was spooky and funny at the same time. I was playing around with diminished chords and half tones and came with these succession of 4 notes that sounded funny and spooky. Then doing the sucession with the left hand (still in my piano) i added a jumping bass with fill-ins with the right hand. It worked quite nice. After that I tried a few notes for the melody and finished the melody completely in the tracker
For the boss melody I did first this rapid succession of notes with my piano at home. Trying around I found this sucession quite interesting. Then keeping with the same bass notes I tried to do a simple melody. Later when adjusting that in the tracker I came out with the final version of the melody and added some power chords with the second square channel (megaman style). I think that even if its quite simple, it works nice
Woops. I don’t know why I forgot to post this one.
Is the main theme for a new origin! Super cool! Super Epic! Super Excitin!
Im quite happy with it. Here also miguel helped and Sam gave to it a little bit more logic to the epic part (some things were a little bit catastrophic, I dont know how did I miss that…)
This probably will be used for the trailer of the game, so actually it was supposed to be a lot of pressure but because it started bein a defeat song (yes, it was a quantum jump) it evolved by itself quite naturally.
Have fun listening!
It was a lot of fun to do this one!
Im starting to use a different workflow to compose that looks to work better. Now, I do first the whole structure of the song with the piano, with the main melodies and chords. Then, I record a piano only version, and after that I start deleting piano parts and putting them in other instruments. Having already the structure makes the work much easier because I only need to think about how to put different instruments, which part will play every instrument and make everything in incremental steps that don’t need to be done all in a row.
In this case I want to thank Miguel Murat also, because he did the testing for the song and helped improve it!
So this song is for the New Origin game. The beginning city has two songs. This is the song that sounds before the earthquake:
I think it sounds quite nice! It’s a very calm song, with little touches of nostalgia and melancholy. It’s good for sleeping “siesta” and relaxing when you are tired of working.
The truth is we are quite enthusiastic about this project right now, because the main developer has set a scrum-oriented way of seeing the development and it’s nice to see the different post-its in a digital scrum board. Like this is much easier to see which songs are ok, which ones are to be improved and which other are still to be done.
In other news etc. I will like to show you a couple of projects I have backed in kickstarter:
This is heart and slash. It’s a 3D rogue-like brawler game whose appearence remember to Megaman Legends. Most of the guys are from Spain so I felt I had to help them. I’m looking forward to play it!
This is mighty no9. Is like the spiritual sucessor of megaman. Nothing more to say. I’m very excited about this one!
My plan was to use this song to get some inspiration for doing the last song of Ninja Trials. Is a temple and it has to be everything very epic but at the same time misterious and quiet. The problem is I got too much inspiration :p. I have to redo the ninja trials song and I keep this as a cover. I’m pretty proud of how it sounds at the end. I will try to learn not to get so much inspiration next time!
I’ve done a track using a soundset of Snesology and I’ve submitted it. This snesology is a project to do new music with snes sounds and its really awesome.
The song I did was using a Terranigma soundset (you all know I love this game and its music so for me it was a real pleasure to do this) It’s a song based on Loira’s theme (Europe) from the game, but just different, that’s why is called just Another Loira. I tried to copy the structure and the movements of the instruments but at the same time do my own thing. Of course the original is just brilliant but I’m very happy with what I did.
Here the original version:
Another thing I wanted to comment is a song Alex Roe made himself with the soundset. Alex Roe (also known as RoeTaka in soundcloud) is one of the guys behind the Snesology project. He does excellent works using the sounds he himself extracts from the snes. One of his works is this:
As he says is the song that would sound if the world map would have a night version. I discovered it yesterday and I really love it. It reminds me totally to the game but at the same time it has his own charisma and sound. You will remember the melody just by listening once and the orchestration, detail and care given to it makes the song really worth to listen to once and again.
