Shrinking Contract OST

Last weekend was Ludum dare 26 and a really nice guy contacted with us to compose for him. Ludum dare is a competition that is held on the internet in which all the participants have to create a whole game in 48 hours and submit it. Later people would play the games and decide which ones are better. You can check the games and vote in this web page:

Don’t play too much because this year there are… more than 1500 games submitted! I still get surprised when I think about it. Anyways let’s talk about our game:

It’s a game called Shrinking Contract. The game is about a little guy who jumps and has to get triangles. It’s very simple and at the same time really fun to play. The mechanics of rebounding around are great.

So, for making the music we started to play the game to find an idea. The first theme that came up was “jumpy”. We started to pick jumpy music samples and work on them, and we found one that was specifically crazy and funny (you can hear it in the background of the song). Later, around that, we constructed the song.

Our theme for the song was “Jumpy” but actually the ludum dare of this year had also a theme in which the game was based, “minimalism”. Our friend chillhammer implemented the minimalistic theme using a character that becomes “mini”. We added the theme to the song trying to stay simple.

Guided by the “Jumpy” sample, we went with the flow of the composition and this lead us to sounds and melodies that produced a very smooth ambient. We chose a square-type sound for the melody to give this 8-bit sensation, a interesting “uh” sound to go with the maracas and the wood rhythm, and then a base guitar and light piano chords to give a little bit of foundation. Then we tried everything together with the game and it worked very well!

The structure is quite simple as well (minimalistic!). The melody and the bass separate the song into an A and B part and when the song repeats, there is an additional piano that brings a variation. In the A part little notes introduce the new voice and it gets in the lower pitch of B part it fits perfectly together doing a more elaborated melody.

You can hear the song in SoundCloud:

Or directly in the game:
